'A Personal Project'

Originally created as a purely personal project, this work explores the themes of illness, isolation and identity.

The immediate and one-off nature of an instant photograph fascinates many from childhood onwards, and allows fleeting moments to be captured quickly, making this the ideal medium for images within the family album, or in this case a personal diary complete with annotations.

While the traditional family album typically features family events, birthdays and childhood milestones, the genre of intimate photography is embraced here to create the ‘anti-album’.The journal acts as a visual record of the artist’s life, capturing the moments we might conceal from others or deem ‘too everyday’ – early morning coffee, medication, boredom and watching TV are all treated with equal importance in this record of the everyday.

The ever-growing collection of intimate images taken on a daily basis tell a story of a life ruled by chronic illness at an age when many are planning their next night out. The personal nature of the album is further emphasised through the deliberate use of common domestic ‘mistakes’ – overexposed flash, poor composition and strange colour casts – emulating the intimate nature of something homemade and somewhat secret.
